Sample Essay 1: Online Education
Question
Some people believe that online education is as effective as traditional classroom learning. To what extent do you agree or disagree?
Band 8 Standard Essay
Online education is increasingly seen as a practical alternative to traditional classroom learning. Although digital courses can make education more flexible and accessible, I do not believe they are equally effective for all learners because face-to-face interaction and direct supervision still play a crucial role in learning.
One major advantage of online education is convenience. Students can attend classes from home, save travel time and access recorded lessons whenever they need revision. This is particularly useful for job holders or students living far from major cities. For example, a learner in a small town can join an IELTS course taught by an experienced trainer in Dhaka without relocating. In this sense, online learning can remove geographical barriers and make quality education more inclusive.
However, classroom learning often provides a stronger learning environment. In a physical classroom, teachers can immediately notice confusion, adjust explanations and encourage participation. Students also benefit from peer interaction, group work and a fixed routine, which can improve motivation. By contrast, online learners may easily lose concentration, especially if they lack discipline or study in a distracting home environment.
In my view, online education is highly useful but not always equal to traditional classes. It works best for mature, motivated learners who can manage their time, while younger or weaker students may still need direct classroom support.
In conclusion, online education has made learning more accessible and flexible, but traditional classroom learning remains more effective for many students because of interaction, supervision and learning discipline.
Sample Essay 2: Artificial Intelligence and Jobs
Question
Some people think artificial intelligence will create more jobs, while others believe it will cause unemployment. Discuss both views and give your opinion.
Band 8 Standard Essay
The rapid development of artificial intelligence has created debate about its impact on employment. While some people believe AI will generate new career opportunities, others fear that it will replace human workers. In my opinion, AI will remove some jobs, but it is more likely to transform the labour market than destroy it completely.
On the one hand, AI can reduce the demand for workers in repetitive and predictable jobs. For instance, customer service chatbots, automated accounting software and warehouse robots can perform tasks that previously required human employees. As a result, workers with limited digital skills may lose their jobs or face lower income. This is especially concerning in developing countries where many people depend on routine office or service-based work.
On the other hand, AI is also creating new types of employment. Companies now need AI trainers, data analysts, automation specialists, prompt engineers and cybersecurity experts. Even traditional professionals such as teachers, doctors and marketers can use AI tools to improve productivity rather than become irrelevant. For example, a teacher can use AI to prepare lesson materials faster but still needs human judgement to guide students emotionally and academically.
I believe the real issue is not whether AI will create or destroy jobs, but whether workers can adapt. Governments and institutions should invest in reskilling programmes so that employees can move from routine tasks to more creative and analytical roles.
In conclusion, AI will certainly replace some jobs, but it will also create new opportunities. The best response is not to resist technology, but to prepare people for a changing workplace.
Sample Essay 3: Fast Food Tax
Question
Some people think governments should increase tax on fast food to improve public health. To what extent do you agree or disagree?
Band 8 Standard Essay
There is growing concern about the negative effects of fast food on public health. Some argue that governments should raise taxes on unhealthy food to discourage consumption. I largely agree with this view, although taxation should be combined with education and healthier alternatives.
A higher tax on fast food can reduce excessive consumption, especially among young people and low-income groups who are sensitive to price changes. Fast food is often high in sugar, salt and unhealthy fats, which can contribute to obesity, diabetes and heart disease. If these products become more expensive, some consumers may choose healthier meals instead. This approach has already been used with tobacco and sugary drinks in several countries, where higher prices have helped reduce harmful consumption.
However, taxation alone is unlikely to solve the problem. Many people eat fast food not only because it is cheap, but also because it is convenient. Busy workers and students may not have time to cook healthy meals. Therefore, governments should also make nutritious food more affordable and available. Schools can provide healthier lunches, workplaces can offer better cafeteria options, and public campaigns can teach people how to prepare simple balanced meals.
In my opinion, fast food tax is a useful tool, but it should not be treated as a complete solution. A balanced policy should make unhealthy food less attractive while making healthy choices easier.
In conclusion, I agree that governments should tax fast food more heavily, but this measure will only be effective if it is supported by education and access to affordable healthy food.
Sample Essay 4: Public Transport
Question
Governments should invest more money in public transport rather than building more roads. To what extent do you agree or disagree?
Band 8 Standard Essay
Many cities are struggling with traffic congestion and air pollution. Some people argue that governments should prioritise public transport instead of constructing more roads. I strongly agree because better public transport can move more people efficiently and reduce environmental damage.
Building more roads may seem like a simple solution, but it often encourages more private car use. When roads are expanded, people may feel more comfortable buying cars, which eventually leads to the same level of congestion. This is known as induced demand. In large cities, especially those with limited space, it is unrealistic to keep expanding roads forever. More roads can also destroy green areas and increase pollution.
By contrast, public transport can serve a much larger number of people using less space. A well-managed metro, bus or train system can reduce the number of private vehicles on the road and make daily travel cheaper for ordinary citizens. For example, if office workers can rely on a clean, punctual and safe bus service, many of them may stop using personal cars. This would reduce traffic, fuel consumption and carbon emissions at the same time.
However, investment must focus on quality, not only quantity. Public transport should be safe, affordable, accessible and comfortable. Otherwise, people will continue to prefer private vehicles.
In conclusion, governments should invest more in public transport than road expansion. While roads are necessary, long-term urban mobility depends on efficient mass transport systems, not endless construction of highways.
Sample Essay 5: Social Media Regulation
Question
Some people believe social media platforms should be regulated by governments to reduce misinformation. To what extent do you agree or disagree?
Band 8 Standard Essay
Misinformation on social media has become a serious problem in many societies. Some argue that governments should regulate online platforms to control false information. I agree to a large extent, but such regulation must protect freedom of expression and avoid political misuse.
Government regulation is necessary because misinformation can cause real harm. False health advice, fake political news or rumours during emergencies can mislead millions of people within hours. Social media companies often respond too slowly because their business models depend on engagement, and sensational false content usually attracts attention. Therefore, governments should require platforms to remove clearly harmful misinformation, label unreliable content and increase transparency about algorithms.
However, regulation can become dangerous if it is not carefully designed. In some countries, governments may use “misinformation control” as an excuse to silence criticism or independent journalism. If political authorities decide what is true without accountability, freedom of speech may suffer. For this reason, regulation should involve independent bodies, clear legal definitions and the right to appeal.
In my opinion, the best approach is balanced regulation. Governments should not control every online opinion, but they should force platforms to act responsibly when false information threatens public safety, elections or social stability.
In conclusion, social media regulation is necessary to reduce misinformation, but it must be transparent, limited and independent. The goal should be to protect the public without giving governments unlimited power over speech.
Sample Essay 6: Working from Home
Question
More people are working from home than ever before. Is this a positive or negative development?
Band 8 Standard Essay
Working from home has become increasingly common due to digital technology and changing workplace culture. In my view, this is mostly a positive development because it improves flexibility and productivity, although it can also create problems related to isolation and work-life balance.
One clear benefit of remote work is flexibility. Employees can avoid long commutes, manage their time more efficiently and spend more time with their families. This can reduce stress and improve overall job satisfaction. Companies may also benefit because they can hire skilled workers from different regions without requiring them to move. For example, a software company in one city can employ a talented programmer from another country, which increases access to talent.
Another advantage is cost reduction. Employees spend less on transport, food and formal clothing, while companies may reduce office rent and utility expenses. These savings can be especially meaningful for small businesses and young professionals.
However, working from home is not perfect. Some workers feel lonely without face-to-face interaction, and communication can become less spontaneous. In addition, home-based employees may struggle to separate work from personal life, leading to longer working hours and burnout.
Overall, I believe working from home is a positive development if organisations manage it properly. A hybrid model, where employees work partly from home and partly in the office, may offer the best balance.
In conclusion, remote work brings flexibility, cost savings and wider employment opportunities, but companies must address isolation and overwork to make it sustainable.
Sample Essay 7: University Education Cost
Question
Some people think university education should be free for everyone. To what extent do you agree or disagree?
Band 8 Standard Essay
The rising cost of university education has led many people to argue that it should be free for all students. I partly agree with this view because higher education benefits society, but I believe completely free university education may not be financially realistic.
Free university education can create a fairer society. Many talented students from low-income families cannot attend university because tuition fees are too high. If education were free, students would be selected more on ability than family income. This could increase social mobility and help countries develop a more skilled workforce. For example, doctors, engineers and teachers produced through free higher education can later contribute to national development.
However, making university free for everyone can place a heavy burden on taxpayers. Governments already need to fund healthcare, infrastructure, public safety and school education. If university becomes completely free, the quality of teaching and facilities may decline unless funding is increased significantly. Moreover, wealthy families who can afford tuition would also benefit, which may not be the best use of public money.
A more balanced solution is to provide free or subsidised education for students who genuinely need financial support. Scholarships, low-interest loans and income-based repayment systems can make university accessible without overloading government budgets.
In conclusion, university education should be affordable and accessible, but not necessarily free for everyone. Targeted support for disadvantaged students is a fairer and more sustainable approach.
Sample Essay 8: Children and Screen Time
Question
Children today spend too much time using screens. What problems can this cause, and what solutions can be taken?
Band 8 Standard Essay
Children are spending increasing amounts of time on smartphones, tablets and computers. This trend can create serious problems for their health, learning and social development, but parents and schools can take practical steps to manage screen use.
One major problem is reduced physical activity. Children who spend many hours watching videos or playing games are less likely to exercise, which can increase the risk of obesity and poor posture. Excessive screen time may also affect sleep, especially when children use devices late at night. Another concern is concentration. Fast-moving digital content can make children impatient and less able to focus on books, classroom lessons or long-term tasks.
Screen overuse can also harm social skills. If children spend more time online than interacting with family and friends, they may struggle to develop empathy, communication skills and emotional control. This is particularly worrying because childhood is a key period for social development.
To address these problems, parents should set clear screen-time limits and create screen-free routines, such as no phones during meals or before bed. Schools should educate children about healthy digital habits and encourage sports, reading and creative activities. Technology itself can also help through parental control tools and app timers.
In conclusion, excessive screen time can damage children’s health, concentration and social skills. However, with clear rules, education and alternative activities, children can use technology in a healthier and more balanced way.
Sample Essay 9: Crime and Rehabilitation
Question
Some people believe that education and training for prisoners can reduce crime after they are released. To what extent do you agree or disagree?
Band 8 Standard Essay
Many people argue that providing education and vocational training to prisoners can reduce crime after release. I strongly agree because these programmes can improve employment opportunities and help prisoners rebuild their identity in a positive way.
One of the main reasons former prisoners reoffend is lack of opportunity. After release, many struggle to find work because they have limited skills and a criminal record. If prisons offer training in areas such as carpentry, computer skills, cooking or basic literacy, prisoners can leave with practical abilities that improve their chances of employment. A stable job can reduce financial pressure and make it less likely that they will return to crime.
Education can also change attitudes. Many offenders come from backgrounds where they had poor schooling, limited guidance or negative social influences. Learning can improve their confidence, decision-making and sense of responsibility. For example, a prisoner who completes a diploma or learns a trade may begin to see himself as a worker or student rather than a criminal. This psychological change is important for long-term rehabilitation.
However, education alone cannot solve every problem. Former prisoners also need social support, counselling and employers willing to give them a second chance. Without these, even trained individuals may struggle to reintegrate.
In conclusion, I strongly believe education and training in prisons can reduce reoffending. By improving skills and attitudes, these programmes help prisoners return to society as productive citizens rather than repeat offenders.
Sample Essay 10: Climate Change Responsibility
Question
Some people think individuals should take responsibility for climate change, while others believe governments and large companies are responsible. Discuss both views and give your opinion.
Band 8 Standard Essay
Climate change is one of the most serious global challenges, and there is debate about who should be responsible for addressing it. While individuals can make meaningful lifestyle changes, I believe governments and large companies have the greatest responsibility because they control policies and industrial emissions.
Individuals do play an important role. Everyday choices such as using public transport, reducing plastic waste, saving electricity and eating less meat can reduce environmental impact. If millions of people adopt greener habits, the combined effect can be significant. Individual behaviour also creates pressure on businesses; for instance, consumers who prefer eco-friendly products can encourage companies to change their practices.
However, personal action alone is not enough. Large companies produce a major share of emissions through manufacturing, transport and energy use. Governments also decide environmental laws, public transport investment, renewable energy policy and industrial standards. Without strong regulation, many companies will continue harmful practices because they are cheaper. For example, a person may want to use public transport, but this is difficult if the government has not built a reliable system.
In my opinion, individuals should act responsibly, but governments and corporations must lead the response. They have the resources and authority to create large-scale change.
In conclusion, climate change requires action from everyone, but responsibility is not equal. Governments and large companies should take the lead, while individuals should support change through sustainable daily choices.
Sample Essay 11: Public Libraries
Question
Some people think public libraries are no longer necessary because information is available online. To what extent do you agree or disagree?
Band 8 Standard Essay
With the rise of the internet, some people believe public libraries are no longer needed. I disagree with this view because libraries provide more than information; they offer equal access, quiet study spaces and community support.
It is true that the internet has made information easier to access. Students can find articles, books, videos and research materials within seconds. For many simple questions, online search engines are faster than visiting a library. Digital resources are especially useful for people who live far from city centres.
However, public libraries still serve important social and educational functions. Not everyone has reliable internet access, a personal computer or a quiet place to study at home. Libraries provide free resources to children, low-income families and elderly people. They also offer a calm environment where students can focus without the distractions of social media or noisy surroundings.
In addition, libraries support learning in ways the internet cannot always provide. Librarians can guide users to reliable sources, and many libraries organise reading programmes, workshops and community events. In an age of misinformation, this guidance is valuable.
In my opinion, libraries should not disappear; they should modernise. They can combine printed books with digital access, online databases and study facilities.
In conclusion, although the internet has changed how people access information, public libraries remain necessary because they promote equal opportunity, focused learning and community development.
Sample Essay 12: Advertising to Children
Question
Advertisements aimed at children should be banned. To what extent do you agree or disagree?
Band 8 Standard Essay
Advertising directed at children has become a controversial issue. I largely agree that such advertisements should be restricted or banned because children are easily influenced and cannot fully understand marketing intentions.
Children do not have the same critical thinking ability as adults. When they see colourful advertisements for toys, fast food or sugary snacks, they often believe the product will make them happier or more popular. This can create pressure on parents, who may be forced to buy unnecessary products. More importantly, advertising unhealthy food to children can contribute to poor eating habits and obesity.
Another problem is that modern advertising is not limited to television. Children are now exposed to marketing through YouTube, mobile games and social media, often without realising that content is sponsored. Influencers and cartoon characters can make advertisements feel like entertainment, which makes children even more vulnerable. In this situation, stronger regulation is necessary.
However, not all advertising to children is harmful. Educational products, books or public health campaigns can benefit young audiences. Therefore, a complete ban may be too strict if it includes genuinely useful messages.
In my view, commercial advertising that exploits children’s emotions should be banned, especially for unhealthy food and unnecessary consumer goods. Educational and public-interest messages can remain, but they should be clearly labelled.
In conclusion, advertisements aimed at children should be heavily restricted because children are vulnerable consumers. Protecting their health and development is more important than companies’ marketing freedom.
Sample Essay 13: Four-Day Work Week
Question
Some people think a four-day work week would improve employees’ lives. Others believe it would reduce productivity. Discuss both views and give your opinion.
Band 8 Standard Essay
The idea of a four-day work week has gained attention as people look for better work-life balance. Some believe it would improve employees’ wellbeing, while others worry that productivity would fall. In my view, a shorter work week can be beneficial if companies focus on efficiency rather than simply reducing hours.
Supporters argue that a four-day week can improve mental health and job satisfaction. Employees with an extra day off can spend more time with family, rest properly and manage personal responsibilities. This can reduce stress and burnout, which are common problems in modern workplaces. Happier workers may also be more loyal and motivated, reducing staff turnover.
On the other hand, critics argue that fewer working days may reduce output, especially in industries that depend on customer service, manufacturing or tight deadlines. If the same amount of work has to be completed in less time, employees may feel even more pressure. Small businesses may also struggle to maintain service quality without hiring extra staff.
I believe the success of a four-day work week depends on the type of work and management quality. In knowledge-based jobs, unnecessary meetings and inefficient processes can often be reduced, allowing workers to produce the same results in less time. However, it may not suit every sector.
In conclusion, a four-day work week can improve employees’ lives without damaging productivity, but only when it is introduced carefully and adapted to each industry.
Sample Essay 14: Space Exploration
Question
Some people think governments should spend money on space exploration, while others believe it should be spent on problems on Earth. Discuss both views and give your opinion.
Band 8 Standard Essay
Government spending on space exploration is often debated. While some people believe it leads to scientific progress, others argue that public money should be used to solve urgent problems on Earth. I believe space research has value, but basic human needs should be prioritised first.
Space exploration can bring important benefits. Research in this field has contributed to satellite communication, weather forecasting, navigation systems and scientific understanding. It can also inspire young people to study science and technology. In the long term, space research may help humanity understand climate systems, natural disasters and even future survival risks.
However, critics have a strong argument. Many countries still struggle with poverty, poor healthcare, unemployment and weak education systems. Spending billions on space missions may seem irresponsible when citizens lack clean water, hospitals or schools. Public money should first improve people’s quality of life. A government that cannot provide basic services should not treat space exploration as a top priority.
In my opinion, the best approach is balance. Wealthy countries can invest in space research while also funding social services. Developing countries, however, should focus mainly on education, healthcare and infrastructure before spending heavily on expensive space programmes.
In conclusion, space exploration is valuable for science and future innovation, but it should not come at the cost of solving immediate problems on Earth. Human welfare must remain the first priority.
Sample Essay 15: Old Buildings
Question
Some people think old buildings should be protected, while others believe they should be replaced with modern buildings. Discuss both views and give your opinion.
Band 8 Standard Essay
There is ongoing debate about whether old buildings should be preserved or replaced with modern structures. While new buildings can meet current needs more efficiently, I believe historically valuable buildings should be protected because they preserve culture and identity.
Those who support replacing old buildings argue that many of them are unsafe, expensive to maintain and unsuitable for modern life. Older structures may lack proper ventilation, parking, lifts or earthquake-resistant design. In crowded cities, replacing them with taller buildings can provide more housing, offices and public facilities. From this perspective, redevelopment is practical and economically beneficial.
However, old buildings often carry historical and cultural value. They show how people lived, what they believed and how cities developed over time. If all old structures are demolished, a city may lose its character and become visually identical to any modern urban area. Historic buildings can also attract tourists, support local businesses and create pride among residents.
In my view, the decision should depend on the building’s value. Ordinary old buildings that are unsafe and have no cultural importance may be replaced. But buildings with architectural, historical or emotional significance should be restored and reused. For example, an old railway station can become a museum, library or cultural centre.
In conclusion, modern development is necessary, but it should not erase history. Societies should protect meaningful old buildings while allowing practical redevelopment where preservation is not justified.
Sample Essay 16: Cashless Society
Question
Many countries are moving towards a cashless society. Do the advantages outweigh the disadvantages?
Band 8 Standard Essay
Digital payments are becoming increasingly common, and many societies are gradually moving away from cash. In my opinion, the advantages of a cashless society outweigh the disadvantages, provided that governments protect vulnerable groups and improve digital security.
One major benefit is convenience. People can pay bills, transfer money and buy products without carrying physical cash. This saves time and reduces the risk of losing money. Businesses also benefit because digital payments create clear transaction records and reduce the cost of handling cash. Governments can use these records to reduce tax evasion and corruption.
Another advantage is financial inclusion. Mobile banking allows people in remote areas to receive payments, save money and access financial services without visiting a traditional bank. This can be particularly useful in developing countries where bank branches are limited.
However, a cashless society has risks. Elderly people, rural communities and low-income groups may struggle if they lack smartphones, internet access or digital literacy. Cybercrime is another serious concern; hackers can steal money or personal information if systems are weak.
Despite these disadvantages, I believe they can be managed through education, strong cybersecurity and keeping limited cash options available. The overall direction towards digital payment is positive.
In conclusion, a cashless society offers greater convenience, transparency and access to financial services. Although it creates risks, these can be reduced with careful planning and inclusive policies.
Sample Essay 17: Renewable Energy
Question
Governments should invest more in renewable energy than fossil fuels. To what extent do you agree or disagree?
Band 8 Standard Essay
Energy policy is a major issue as countries face climate change and rising energy demand. I strongly agree that governments should invest more in renewable energy than fossil fuels because it is cleaner, more sustainable and increasingly practical.
The strongest reason to prioritise renewable energy is environmental protection. Fossil fuels such as coal, oil and gas release large amounts of greenhouse gases, which contribute to global warming and air pollution. Renewable sources such as solar, wind and hydro power produce far fewer emissions. By investing in these technologies, governments can reduce environmental damage and improve public health.
Renewable energy also improves long-term energy security. Fossil fuel prices can change suddenly due to political conflict or supply shortages. In contrast, sunlight, wind and water are naturally available in many regions. Although renewable infrastructure can be expensive at first, it can reduce dependence on imported fuel over time. This is especially important for countries that spend large amounts of money on energy imports.
Some people argue that fossil fuels are still necessary because renewable energy can be unreliable. This is partly true, since solar and wind power depend on weather conditions. However, battery storage and improved grid systems are making renewable energy more reliable each year.
In conclusion, governments should invest more heavily in renewable energy because it protects the environment and supports long-term energy independence. Fossil fuels may still be needed during the transition, but they should not remain the main focus.
Sample Essay 18: School Exams
Question
Some people believe exams are the best way to assess students, while others think continuous assessment is better. Discuss both views and give your opinion.
Band 8 Standard Essay
Assessment is an essential part of education, but people disagree about the best method. Some believe final exams are the most effective way to measure performance, while others prefer continuous assessment. In my view, continuous assessment is generally better, although exams still have a useful role.
Exams are popular because they are standardised and easy to compare. All students answer similar questions under the same conditions, which can make grading appear fair. Exams also teach students to work under pressure and organise knowledge quickly. For subjects such as mathematics or science, timed tests can measure problem-solving ability effectively.
However, exams have limitations. A student’s performance on one day may be affected by stress, illness or personal problems. Exams also encourage memorisation, especially when students focus only on likely questions. This can reduce deeper learning and creativity.
Continuous assessment gives a more complete picture of a student’s ability. Projects, presentations, class participation and assignments allow teachers to evaluate research skills, teamwork, communication and long-term progress. This method also encourages students to study regularly instead of preparing only before exams.
I believe the best system combines both methods, but gives more weight to continuous assessment. Final exams can check individual understanding, while regular assessment can measure broader skills.
In conclusion, exams are useful but should not be the only way to judge students. Continuous assessment is more balanced because it reflects learning over time.
Sample Essay 19: Tourism
Question
International tourism brings many benefits, but it can also create problems. Do the advantages outweigh the disadvantages?
Band 8 Standard Essay
International tourism has grown rapidly in recent decades. Although it can create environmental and cultural problems, I believe its advantages outweigh its disadvantages when it is managed responsibly.
Tourism brings significant economic benefits. It creates jobs in hotels, restaurants, transport and entertainment. Many developing countries depend on tourism income to support local communities and improve infrastructure. For example, tourist demand can encourage governments to build better roads, airports and public facilities, which also benefit local residents.
Tourism also promotes cultural exchange. When visitors experience local food, traditions and history, they develop a better understanding of other societies. This can reduce prejudice and encourage international cooperation. Local people may also feel proud of their culture when they see foreign visitors showing interest in it.
However, tourism can cause problems. Popular destinations may suffer from overcrowding, pollution and damage to historical sites. In some places, local culture becomes commercialised, and residents may be priced out of their own communities due to rising rents and living costs.
Despite these issues, I believe they can be controlled through responsible tourism policies. Governments can limit visitor numbers in sensitive areas, charge conservation fees and encourage eco-friendly travel.
In conclusion, international tourism has more benefits than drawbacks because it supports economies and cultural understanding. However, its success depends on careful management that protects local people, heritage and the environment.
Sample Essay 20: Parents and Children
Question
Some people think parents should teach children how to be good members of society, while others believe schools should do this. Discuss both views and give your opinion.
Band 8 Standard Essay
There is debate about whether parents or schools should be mainly responsible for teaching children to become good members of society. In my opinion, both play important roles, but parents have the primary responsibility because children’s values are formed first at home.
Parents influence children from the earliest years. Before children enter school, they learn basic behaviour such as honesty, kindness, respect and self-control from family members. If parents show responsibility and empathy in daily life, children are likely to copy these behaviours. For example, a child who sees parents helping neighbours or speaking politely will understand social responsibility naturally.
Schools also have an important role because they provide a wider social environment. In school, children learn to cooperate with classmates, follow rules and respect people from different backgrounds. Teachers can introduce moral education, teamwork and community service activities. These experiences help children understand society beyond their family circle.
However, schools cannot replace parents. A teacher may spend a few hours a day with a child, but family influence continues at home. If parents teach poor behaviour or ignore discipline, schools may struggle to correct it completely.
In conclusion, both parents and schools should teach children social values. However, parents should take the main responsibility, while schools should reinforce and expand the lessons learned at home.
Sample Essay 21: Animal Testing
Question
Some people believe animal testing is necessary for medical research, while others think it is cruel and should be banned. Discuss both views and give your opinion.
Band 8 Standard Essay
Animal testing is a highly controversial issue. Some people argue that it is necessary for medical progress, while others believe it is unethical and should be banned. In my view, animal testing should be reduced as much as possible, but it may still be justified in limited medical research when no reliable alternative exists.
Supporters of animal testing argue that it has helped scientists develop medicines, vaccines and surgical techniques. Testing on animals can show whether a treatment is dangerous before it is used on humans. In life-saving research, such as cancer treatment or vaccine development, completely banning animal testing could slow medical progress and put human lives at risk.
However, opponents argue that animals can suffer pain, fear and long-term harm in laboratories. Since animals cannot consent, using them for experiments raises serious moral concerns. In addition, results from animal studies do not always apply perfectly to humans, which means some suffering may not lead to useful outcomes.
I believe the most ethical approach is strict regulation. Animal testing should only be allowed for essential medical research, not for cosmetics or non-essential products. Scientists should also use alternatives such as computer modelling, cell testing and human tissue studies whenever possible.
In conclusion, animal testing is morally problematic but may still be necessary in some medical contexts. The goal should be to minimise animal suffering while continuing important research that can save human lives.
Sample Essay 22: Museums and Entry Fees
Question
Some people think museums should be free for everyone, while others believe visitors should pay an entry fee. Discuss both views and give your opinion.
Band 8 Standard Essay
Museums play an important role in preserving history, culture and knowledge. Some people believe they should be free to enter, while others argue that visitors should pay. In my opinion, major public museums should be free or very affordable, but special exhibitions may charge fees.
Free entry allows more people to access culture and education. Students, low-income families and tourists with limited budgets can learn about history, science and art without financial barriers. Since museums often receive public funding, it is reasonable to expect that citizens should benefit from them. Free museums can also encourage young people to develop curiosity and national identity.
On the other hand, museums need money for maintenance, staff, security and preservation. Historical objects require careful protection, and modern exhibitions can be expensive to organise. Entry fees can help museums improve facilities and reduce dependence on government funding. If museums are completely free, quality may decline unless public funding is sufficient.
A balanced solution is best. Permanent collections in public museums should be free or low-cost, while temporary or specialised exhibitions can charge reasonable fees. This allows access for the general public while still generating revenue.
In conclusion, museums should remain accessible because they provide educational and cultural benefits. However, carefully managed entry fees for special exhibitions can help maintain quality without excluding ordinary visitors.
Sample Essay 23: Gap Year
Question
Some students take a gap year before starting university. Do the advantages outweigh the disadvantages?
Band 8 Standard Essay
Taking a gap year before university has become increasingly common. In my opinion, the advantages outweigh the disadvantages if students use the time productively, although an unplanned gap year can create problems.
One major advantage is personal growth. After years of school, many students are unsure about their interests and career goals. A gap year can give them time to travel, volunteer, work or learn new skills. These experiences can make them more mature and independent before entering university. For example, a student who works part-time may develop communication skills and financial responsibility.
Another benefit is better academic direction. Some students choose university subjects without understanding their future career options. During a gap year, they can explore different fields, take short courses or gain practical experience. This may help them make a more informed decision and avoid changing subjects later.
However, a gap year can be disadvantageous if students waste the time. Without a clear plan, they may lose study habits, become lazy or feel left behind when their friends start university. Some may also face pressure from family or society.
Overall, I believe a gap year is beneficial when it has a purpose. Students should set goals, such as improving language skills, gaining work experience or preparing for admission.
In conclusion, the advantages of a gap year outweigh the disadvantages if it is planned carefully and used for meaningful development.
Sample Essay 24: Healthcare Responsibility
Question
Some people think individuals are responsible for their own health, while others believe governments should be responsible. Discuss both views and give your opinion.
Band 8 Standard Essay
Health is influenced by both personal choices and public systems. Some people argue that individuals should take responsibility for their own health, while others believe governments should be responsible. In my view, individuals must make healthy choices, but governments have a duty to create conditions that support public health.
Individuals clearly play an important role. Many health problems are linked to lifestyle choices such as poor diet, lack of exercise, smoking and excessive alcohol consumption. People can reduce their risk of disease by eating balanced meals, sleeping properly and staying physically active. It would be unfair to blame governments entirely when people knowingly follow unhealthy habits.
However, governments also have major responsibilities. They control healthcare systems, food safety laws, public parks, school meals and health education campaigns. If healthy food is too expensive or safe public spaces are unavailable, individuals may struggle to maintain good health. Governments can also prevent disease through vaccination programmes, clean water supply and regulations on harmful products.
In my opinion, health should be seen as a shared responsibility. Individuals should make sensible daily choices, but governments must provide affordable healthcare, reliable information and supportive environments.
In conclusion, people are responsible for their personal habits, but governments must protect and promote public health. The best results come when both sides work together.
Sample Essay 25: Technology in Education
Question
Some people think technology has made education better, while others believe it has created new problems. Discuss both views and give your opinion.
Band 8 Standard Essay
Technology has transformed education in many ways. While some people believe it has improved learning, others argue that it has introduced new problems. I believe technology has generally made education better, but only when it is used with proper guidance.
One major benefit of technology is access. Students can now attend online classes, watch recorded lessons and use digital libraries from almost anywhere. This is especially helpful for learners in remote areas who may not have access to high-quality teachers. Technology also allows students to learn at their own pace, pause videos and repeat difficult lessons.
Technology can also make learning more interactive. Educational apps, quizzes and simulations can help students understand complex topics more easily. For example, science students can watch animations of chemical reactions or biological processes that are difficult to observe in real life.
However, technology can create distractions. Students may open social media, games or entertainment apps during study time. It may also reduce face-to-face communication and encourage copying from online sources instead of original thinking. Teachers must therefore guide students on how to use technology responsibly.
In my view, the problem is not technology itself, but uncontrolled use. With clear rules and effective teaching, digital tools can greatly improve education.
In conclusion, technology has made education more accessible and flexible, but schools and parents must manage its use carefully to avoid distraction and dependence.
Sample Essay 26: Rich-Poor Gap
Question
The gap between rich and poor people is increasing in many countries. What problems does this cause, and what solutions can be taken?
Band 8 Standard Essay
Economic inequality is increasing in many parts of the world. This widening gap between rich and poor can create serious social and economic problems, but governments can reduce it through fair policies and better access to opportunity.
One major problem is social tension. When a small group controls most of the wealth while many people struggle to afford basic needs, frustration and resentment can grow. This may lead to higher crime rates, political instability and lower trust in institutions. Inequality also limits social mobility because children from poor families often receive weaker education and healthcare, making it harder for them to escape poverty.
Another problem is slower economic development. If most people have low income, they spend less on goods and services, which can reduce business growth. A country cannot reach its full potential if large sections of the population lack skills, health and purchasing power.
To address this issue, governments should invest in quality public education and healthcare. These services give poorer citizens a better chance to improve their lives. Tax systems should also be fair, with wealthy individuals and large companies contributing an appropriate share. In addition, job training programmes can help low-income workers move into better-paid employment.
In conclusion, the growing gap between rich and poor can damage social stability and economic progress. However, fair taxation, education, healthcare and skills training can reduce inequality and create a more balanced society.
Sample Essay 27: Children and Competition
Question
Some people believe competition is good for children, while others think cooperation is more important. Discuss both views and give your opinion.
Band 8 Standard Essay
People have different views about whether children should be taught to compete or cooperate. While competition can motivate children to work hard, I believe cooperation is more important for their long-term development.
Competition can have benefits. It encourages children to set goals, make effort and deal with pressure. In academic exams or sports, competition can push students to improve their performance. It also prepares them for adult life, where people often compete for university places, jobs and promotions. A child who learns healthy competition may become more confident and ambitious.
However, excessive competition can create stress and selfish behaviour. Children may start to believe that winning is more important than learning or helping others. Those who repeatedly lose may feel worthless or lose motivation. This can damage mental health and reduce enjoyment of learning.
Cooperation teaches skills that are essential in modern society. Most workplaces require teamwork, communication and problem-solving with others. In schools, group projects can help children learn patience, empathy and responsibility. These qualities are not only useful for success but also important for building healthy relationships.
In my opinion, competition should exist, but it should not dominate education. Children should learn to challenge themselves while also respecting and supporting others.
In conclusion, competition can motivate children, but cooperation is more valuable overall because it develops social skills, empathy and teamwork. A balanced approach is best, with cooperation as the stronger focus.
Sample Essay 28: City Life
Question
More people are moving to cities from rural areas. What problems can this cause, and how can these problems be solved?
Band 8 Standard Essay
Urban migration is increasing as people move from rural areas to cities in search of better opportunities. Although this can support economic growth, it also creates serious problems such as overcrowding, pressure on services and housing shortages.
One major problem is overcrowding. When too many people move to cities, roads, schools, hospitals and public transport systems become overloaded. This can lead to traffic congestion, long waiting times in hospitals and lower quality of education. Housing also becomes more expensive, forcing low-income families to live in informal or unsafe settlements.
Another issue is the decline of rural areas. When young and skilled people leave villages, rural economies may weaken. Farming, local businesses and community life can suffer, making the gap between urban and rural development even wider.
To solve these problems, governments should improve facilities in rural areas. Better schools, healthcare, internet access and job opportunities can reduce the need to migrate. Investment in small industries and agricultural technology can also make rural life more economically attractive. At the same time, cities need better urban planning, affordable housing and efficient public transport.
In conclusion, rural-to-urban migration can cause overcrowding and inequality if it is not managed well. The best solution is balanced development, where rural areas become more livable and cities are planned more effectively.
Sample Essay 29: Learning Foreign Languages
Question
Some people think children should start learning a foreign language at primary school rather than secondary school. Do the advantages outweigh the disadvantages?
Band 8 Standard Essay
There is debate about whether children should begin learning a foreign language in primary school instead of waiting until secondary school. I believe the advantages outweigh the disadvantages because younger children can develop pronunciation and confidence more naturally.
One major advantage is that children usually learn languages more easily at a young age. They are less afraid of making mistakes and can absorb sounds, rhythm and basic vocabulary through songs, stories and games. Early exposure can also improve pronunciation because young learners are more flexible in imitating new sounds.
Another benefit is long-term academic and career value. In a globalised world, foreign language ability can help students access higher education, international communication and better job opportunities. If children start early, they have more time to build a strong foundation before advanced study.
However, there are some disadvantages. Primary schools may already have crowded curricula, and adding another language could create pressure. If teachers are not properly trained, children may learn incorrect pronunciation or become confused. Therefore, language learning at this stage should be enjoyable and age-appropriate rather than exam-focused.
Overall, I believe early foreign language learning is beneficial if it is taught in a simple and engaging way.
In conclusion, children should start learning a foreign language at primary school because it improves pronunciation, confidence and long-term ability. The disadvantages can be reduced through proper teacher training and suitable materials.
Sample Essay 30: Government Spending on Arts
Question
Some people think governments should spend money on arts, while others believe public money should be used for healthcare and education. Discuss both views and give your opinion.
Band 8 Standard Essay
Government spending is often debated because public money is limited. Some people believe the arts deserve funding, while others argue that healthcare and education should receive priority. In my opinion, healthcare and education should come first, although the arts should not be completely ignored.
Supporters of arts funding argue that art, music, theatre and cultural events enrich society. They preserve national identity, encourage creativity and attract tourism. Public funding is important because many cultural institutions cannot survive through ticket sales alone. Without support, museums, local theatres and traditional art forms may disappear.
However, healthcare and education are more essential. A society cannot progress if its citizens are unhealthy or poorly educated. Hospitals save lives, while schools and universities prepare people for employment and responsible citizenship. In many countries, public hospitals are overcrowded and schools lack basic resources. In such cases, spending large amounts on arts may seem unfair.
I believe governments should prioritise healthcare and education because they directly affect people’s quality of life and economic future. Nevertheless, a small portion of the budget can still support arts, especially projects that are educational or preserve cultural heritage.
In conclusion, arts are valuable, but healthcare and education should receive the largest share of public funding. A balanced budget can protect culture while ensuring that basic human needs are met first.
